National Youth Development Outreach (NYDO) is a registered Non-Profit Organisation and was established 30 years ago. We provide training, education, and development programmes to children, youth, and their families in Mamelodi, Eersterust, Cullinan, and Bronkhorstspruit through preventative and restorative initiatives. 


NYDO delivers youth skills development programme and activities inspiring, motivating, and promoting community safety. In partnership with the Department of Social Development, our accredited community-based diversion services have an 85% success rate for children between 12 and 18 years attending our programme and not participating in criminal activities.  Youth skills development is a holistic approach working towards community safety and active citizenship. The projects and activities at NYDO spark participation and active involvement for youth to contribute positively to their communities.  


You will be joining an innovative and well-established organisation at an exciting time. Based in Eersterust, NYDO is duly registered as a Non-Profit Company (1995) and as a Non-Profit Organisation (2011). It is ready to embark on its next growth stage, and you will be leading it through this phase, representing the chance to bring about systemic impact. This new role will help drive forward and champion our work and impact in the eastern parts of Pretoria and across South Africa.


Our organisation has shown remarkable resilience and adaptability over the past 30 years and has positively impacted the served communities. However, the organisation is coming out of a declining and also a planning process and is moving to a growth phase and finding itself in a fragile social ecosystems where support for social impact in youth development is still a challenge. Your key role will be to help build the organisation's sustainability, initially prioritising our work in the eastern parts of Tshwane, where the opportunities are growing exponentially. Longer-term, you will lead, develop, and secure investment for social enterprise activities focussed on skills development opportunities.


You will be working with capable staff in the office, and the Board of Directors will provide support and excellent governance. This is an exceptional opportunity to support youth development on a local level with the potential to grow this organisation into a national organisation.

The CEO of NYDO is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organisation and is also responsible for, and expected to implement organisational strategies and policies as established by the Board of Directors. The duties include, but is not limited to overseeing organisation operations, communicating between the Board of Directors and stakeholders, and making critical decisions that impact NYDO's brand identity and financial health.

 

In strengthening the organisation's ability to fulfil its vision and objectives, you will be able to achieve these objectives by personally embodying and articulating NYDO's vision by developing, implementing, reviewing, and revising the implementation strategies to achieve the organisation's youth development goals. By enabling NYDO's sustainability abilities to fulfil its vision by mobilising, equipping, and resourcing the staff and volunteers to serve the communities and partner with stakeholders to implement NYDO's programmes effectively. You will represent NYDO to community leaders, regulatory bodies, other organisations, funders and supporters, and the general public.

Fundraising

  • Review and improve the high performing fundraising strategy, e.g., branching out to skills development training.
  • Ensure cost-effectively implementation by the Fundraising manager and the ad-hoc/intern team.
  • Produce funding applications for submission to Government, non-government organisations, corporate CSI departments and foundations to increase the percentage of South Africa based funding.
  • Ensure fundraising goals are achieved in collaboration with the BOD.
  • Develop and implement SETA related services as determined by the BOD.
  • Develop and implement social entrepreneur activities in line with the BOD expectations. 
  • Occasional domestic travel for fundraising or meetings with organisational partners in and around Gauteng.

Financial Management

  • Oversee preparation of the annual budget, including program funding allocations, in time for funder deadlines. 
  • Oversee the transparency, ethics and integrity of the financial team members.

  • Proactively ensure financial planning for facility upgrades, capital item purchases or construction projects.
  • Maintain a strategic opportunity fund of at least R500,000 to enable rapid response to decisions on facilities or programs.
  • Actively work towards building on the reserve fund of at least 6 months' operating expenses to protect against funding fluctuations or declines.

Human Resource Management

  • Demonstrate a passion for cross-cultural diversity and integration through building on the policies of NYDO. 
  • Implement a motivational performance management process for all staff, including ongoing performance reviews, and ensure recognition and appreciation is forefront in collaboration with the BOD committee. 
  • Oversee and guide the ongoing investment in the skills, competency and leadership development of NYDO staff to ensure the maximum release of human potential. 
  • Champion high-quality staff/volunteer devotions and training events/retreats for staff development and enrichment.
  • Hire, reward, discipline, terminate, and set the job descriptions and appropriate remuneration of all employees except for him/herself, in accordance with policy and/or approved budgets and in collaboration with appropriate managers and the BOD committee.
  • Review and develop policy in conjunction with the BOD for volunteers, staff and organisational management. 
  • Maintain competent and effective managerial staff by inviting collaboration, seeking input into decision making, offering opportunities for feedback, delegating responsibility and overseeing results.
  • Establish a positive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations.
  • Build organisational resilience to challenges and encourage leadership growth within staff and volunteers.

Communications

  • Ensure there is a clear communication strategy which maximises opportunities for advocacy, fundraising that will build on NYDO's brand reputation
  • Oversee and sign off on the release the production of promotional and fundraising resources such as newsletters, websites, brochures, videos, social media, etc. 
  • Maintain relationships and communication with funding partners and key individual donors by representing NYDO and internationally, building a vibrant network of strategic relationships.
  • Guide and capacitate Fundraisers and relevant managers to contact media (newspaper, radio, T.V., web, etc.) as relevant opportunities arise for coverage of NYDO programs and events with the CEO's approval.

Key Stakeholder Relationships/Collaborator

  • The CEO has a strong leadership presence
  • Establish strong trusted stakeholder relationships that can be leveraged to help deliver results, e.g., CBOs, training centres & NGO collaboration partners in the community  
  • Develop and maintain a strong positive brand reputation for NYDO
  • Ensure NYDO's profile is enhanced through media appearances, and top-level engagement with Government, business, the general public and other NGOs
  • Form positive collaborative relationships with partners implementing programmes and volunteers
  • Develop and increase the utilisation of local volunteers in order to mobilise greater community engagement.

Programme Leadership

  • Develop a clear strategy for NYDO Programmes both within current communities and potential national communities
  • Engage with funding providers to support Programmes where required, e.g., NLC, Grants, Trusts etc.
  • Ensure NYDO's different Programmes are well planned in guiding managers to set up an annual goal-driven implementation plan by January.
  • Ensure Programmes are implemented and managed effectively by the management team.

Advocacy

  • Act as the chief external advocate for the organisation, ensuring key messages for the goals of NYDO are known on macro, micro, and meso levels influencing service delivery in communities.

  • Achieve strategic goals for fundraising, Programme management, advocacy and financial reserves

Person Specification


Educational qualification

  • Relevant undergraduate degree essential
  • Relevant post graded degree would be an advantage

Work experience

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in management and leadership  
  • Demonstrable leadership skills
  • Strong strategic capability
  • Proven ability to achieve organisational goals
  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal skills and stakeholder management
  • Knowledge and experience of the NPO sector (required) and/or SETA procedure and social entrepreneurship (beneficial)
  • Fundraising experience is required

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite

The selection process is a 2-Stage process:


Stage 1 – shortlisted candidates will be invited to an initial brief interview via Zoom on the in the week of 20th June 2022 

 

Stage 2 – selected candidates will be invited to a final stage that will involve a full presentation to the NYDO Board of Directors, followed by a panel interview. The presentations are likely to take place in the week of 27 June 2022
